10. Alnwick

start: Alnwick
distance: 23 miles
OS map: 75, 81

Alnwick route mapThis is on minor roads and bridleways, some of which can be boggy.

Leave Alnwick on the B6346 heading NW with Hulne Park on your L and climbing steadily towards open country. Continue for about 3 miles past Heckley High House and turn R up the steep hill signposted for White House Folly. Bear L alongside a conifer wood almost opposite the first cottage and continue more easily with panoramic views of the Cheviots to the W. Beyond the farmyard a track leads to the B6347 where the route bears R, past South Charlton farm, then swings L towards East Ditchburn.

A strenuous ascent leads over the open expanse of Brockleyhall Moor, and the highest point of the ride, to the isolated farm of East Ditchburn. Follow the road right through the farmyard where a rough bridleway leads over Red Burn. Some of the track to West Ditchburn can be very boggy. Turn R past the farm heading for Eglingham.

From Eglingham, ride W skirting Beanley Moor. Take a L fork heading S, go L at a crossroads and head SE past Titlington and skirting a hill called Jenny's Lantern. Go NE through East Bolton to pick up the B6346 back to Alnwick.
