12. Otterburn

Starts in Alwinton and takes in the upper Coquet valley before crossing the MOD artillery ranges at Otterburn. Because of this you will need to check whether they're firing or not - see the information page.

Upper Coquetdale is a real treasure of a valley. Follow the public road as far as the remains of Roman camps at (794 085). This involves quite a gain in height and there's more to come. Turn L and follow the MOD road S and then SE. There's a T junction at (812 064). Turn L and go downhill to another T junction at (818 042). Turn L again and after a mile or two you'll pass an old rusting hulk on your R as you make for the junction at (864 013). Views up here are extensive on a good day.

It's downhill all the way now to the public road at Holystone (955 027). Turn L here and it's 3 miles or so back to Alwinton.
