18. Spott

An arduous route but compensated for by good views reaching, as it does, a high point of over 350m. There's a large car park at the W end of Dunbar (662 787). Start from here.

Head SE, cross the main road into Dunbar, ahead then turn L and R passing under the railway. Cross the main A1 starting to head uphill to Wester Broomhouse and Spott. Just past the phone box in Spott turn L. Hard work now. Sharp L turn and along to The Brunt. Follow the road down then up and you're aiming for a T junction at (697 721). You might want to turn L here but the way onwards is upwards! Or, at least, it is until you reach the high point on this road at 354m. Onwards and through forest to find another sharp climb. Turn R at the fork going up to the highest point on this route before heading down towards Cranshaws.

Don't go as far as Cranshaws but turn R on the B6355 to go along the side of Whiteadder Reservoir. Shortly past the end of the reservoir take a R turn for Garvald. This road, too, has a fair climb going up to 345m but the good news is that there's a pub in Garvald.

From Garvald you pick up the B6370 taking you through Stenton and back to the start of the route in Dunbar. Dunbar also has a scenic clifftop path and, if you've time, you could investigate the harbour and John Muir House.
