7. Chillingham

This is suitable for all bikes - entirely on metalled roads - mostly on quiet minor roads. One steep hill to start with, then mainly level with a spectacular downhill ride just before the end. Start from Haugh Head Garage, a mile or so S of Wooler.

Turn L onto the A697 for 200yds. Turn L for Lilburn Hill and follow this road uphill through three sharp bends to Lilburn Hill Farm. Continue downhill to L hand bend in road at entrance to Lilburn Tower to take the first turning on the L, which leads past Lilburn Grange Farm to a crossroads at Knock Well.

Turn R here passing Newtown Farm to take the next turning on the L which leads downhill to the Newtown bridge over the river Till and then climb steadily up 'The Avenue' to the gates of Chillingham Castle (medieval castle, open to visitors in the summer, gardens, walks, museum etc). Turn L to continue the ride. The first turn to the R leads through Chillingham village to the historic church and the entrance to the Wild Cattle Park should you wish to visit either. If you don't, then continue over the iron bridge across the Till to the crossroads at Chatton (pub, shop etc).

At the crossroads, take the first L for Lilburn and ride past Broomhouse Farm to a T junction. Turn R passing Fowberry Mains Farm to a crossroads, go straight across joining the B6348. Follow this to a sharp L hand bend and a spectacular view across the plain to the Cheviot Hills. Descend the hill with Weetwood bridge seen below to the R and continue along the foot of Weetwood Moor past West Weetwood Farm to take the first turn on the L to a T junction. Turn R here to pass Glendale Middle School to Bridge End and the A697. Turn L onto the A697 for one mile back to Haugh Head.
