14. Watch Water

This route goes from Carfraemill on the main A68 over the hills towards Gifford and returns via part of the Southern Upland Way to Lauder. This is a long day out with a considerable amount of height gain.

From the Carfraemill Hotel follow the description for the Gifford route to Longyester but instead of bearing L for Gifford, turn R towards Longformacus. Two miles brings you to the B6355. Turn R and, after another two and a half miles of hard work, R again. About 5 miles along here take a R turn at (674 595) for Dye Cottage.

At Dye Cottage you turn L heading south up and over towards Watch Water to join the Southern Upland Way just west of the reservoir. Follow the Westruther route back towards Lauder cutting off for Carfraemill along the A697. (phew! Ed.)
